MultiSal®

Protects sensitive and volatile active ingredients until the moment of use.

A fine, free-flowing powder made by double encapsulation: SalSphere® units are re-encapsulated inside a larger, moisture-sensitive microsphere. It protects ingredients such as retinol, fragrance and menthol in the formula, extends shelf life, and releases them on contact with moisture.

01

The problem

Some active ingredients do not survive the formula.

Retinol degrades, fragrance and menthol evaporate, and reactive ingredients interact with the rest of the formula. Performance is lost before the product is ever used.

  • Retinol and other unstable compounds
  • Volatile fragrance and menthol
  • Ingredients that react with the base
02

The core

First, encapsulate it in SalSphere®.

The active ingredient is first encapsulated in SalSphere® microspheres with a solid lipid core.

03

The second layer

Then encapsulate it again.

The SalSphere® units are re-encapsulated within a larger, moisture-sensitive microsphere. This double encapsulation is what gives MultiSal® its protection and shelf life. The outer layer can also carry a second ingredient.

  • Double encapsulation
  • Optional second ingredient in the outer layer
04

The powder

Protected in the jar.

The result is a fine, free-flowing powder. Tight encapsulation keeps the active ingredient in and keeps diffusion minimal, in emulsions and in anhydrous formats such as oils, sticks, powders and soap bars. It withstands hot processing up to 130 °C.

  • Extends shelf life
  • Emulsions and anhydrous formulas
  • Stable through processing to 130 °C
05

The release

Released when moisture arrives.

Moisture from water, sweat or wet lips opens the outer layer and releases the active ingredient. The outer layer’s composition sets the pace, from a fast burst to a slower or delayed release, and two ingredients can be released one after the other.

  • Moisture-triggered release
  • Fast, slow or delayed
  • Optional sequential release of two ingredients
06

The format

A powder that is soft on skin.

Spherical microspheres that are soft on the skin and easy to work into creams, lotions, serums, masks, sticks and powders.

Why MultiSal®

Protection first. Then much more.

MultiSal® keeps sensitive and volatile active ingredients intact through processing and on the shelf. It can also combine ingredients, sequence their release, and bring water-soluble ingredients into anhydrous formats.

Protection

Shields retinol, fragrance, menthol and other unstable compounds from degradation and evaporation.

Longer shelf life

Double encapsulation keeps active ingredients intact until the product is used.

130 °C

Survives the hot process

Active ingredients are retained through molding, extruding and baking, then released when wet.

Release on moisture

A fresh burst on sweat in deodorants and foot care, or on wet lips in balms and lipsticks.

Anhydrous-ready

Brings water-soluble ingredients into oils, sticks, body powders and soap bars.

2 ingredients

Sequential release

Optionally carries two ingredients and releases them one after the other.

Good to know.

Why double encapsulation?

Encapsulating SalSphere® units inside a second microsphere adds a protective layer around sensitive and volatile active ingredients, which improves stability and shelf life.

What triggers release?

Moisture. Release intensity depends on water activity and on the outer layer’s composition. Diffusion is minimal and noticeable only with very volatile ingredients at high loading.

Can I control how fast it releases?

Yes. An outer layer made with water-soluble ingredients releases fast, more complex polymers release more slowly, and a less water-soluble blend gives a delayed release.

Can it go into a lip balm or stick?

Yes. MultiSal® is compatible with traditional lipstick and balm bases and releases when lips are wet. It also lets you load a balm with oils without softening it.

Is it suitable for hot processing?

MultiSal® protects ingredients up to 130 °C, so active ingredients are retained through molding, extruding and baking.

Have an active ingredient that will not stay stable?

Retinol, fragrance, menthol or another sensitive ingredient: we design the core, the outer layer and the release around your active ingredient and your format.
